Last weekend we kicked off our “Fearless Faith” series on the book of Ephesians. In Paul’s letter to the church of Ephesus, he provided a vision of what Christ will do in a community of faith empowered by His Spirit. His words will inspire us and mobilize us just as they did in the first century. Then, as now, we are called to so much more than we can imagine.
In this week’s passage we’ll learn how to pray for God’s help to know Him, His calling, His riches and His power for life. Paul’s prayer doesn’t contain any requests for material blessings or for relational blessings.
It’s a prayer for deep spiritual blessings in knowing God. As we explore Paul’s prayer our own prayer life can be greatly enhanced and helped.
Be encouraged! Our God is on the throne!
When you pray for others, ________________________ (Ephesians 1:15-16)
Pray God will open your eyes to four realities (Ephesians 1:17-23)
- You can __________ _________ (1:17)
- You can know the __________ of God’s calling (1:18a)
- You can enjoy the riches of ____________________ (1:18b)
- You can experience God’s ______________ ____________ (1:19-23)
Let us pray!
Main Idea: Pray for God’s help to know Him, His calling, His riches and His power for life
In your group (or family), take time to affirm each person. What do you appreciate about each other? How do you see God working in them? What things make you thankful for them?
If you were going to pray for someone, what would you include in your prayer for her or him? How does your list compare with what Paul prayed in Ephesians 1:15-23 (read)?
Read Ephesians 1:15-23 in another Scripture version. What do you learn about Paul and the believers at Ephesus? What words describe his prayer for them? What motivated Paul to pray for these people and what do we learn about his relationship with them?
What is “wisdom, revelation and knowledge” for which Paul prays in 1:17? What does it mean to have “the eyes of your heart enlightened” (1:18)? How do you define the “hope”, “riches” and “power” Paul prays for in 1:18-19? To what end are they applied?
How does God display His power through His Son (Ephesians 1:20-23)? Why do Christ followers need God’s power?
Paul, in his concern for the Ephesians believers, acts on his concern. He writes a letter to encourage them. He asks God to give them hope, riches and power. What importance does prayer have in the effectiveness of a church?
In light of the power available to Christ followers (Ephesians 1:19), what is your favorite excuse for “operating on one or two cylinders” rather than on eight? What is your prayer responsibility as a member of the body of Christ?
ASSIGNMENT: What difference would it make if your LIFE Group prayed Ephesians 1:17-19 every week for each other? Memorize these verses and experiment by praying these verses for your group through the next month. Give a brief report of your observations at your group meeting each week
