If any of you watched the Superbowl last weekend with your family, perhaps there’s a chance you saw the halftime show. Sometimes it’s tempting for us to just turn the station, or some families may choose to watch and enjoy the entertainment. However, this is usually a GREAT opportunity to help our kids apply Biblical teaching in real time.
Hebrews 2:1 says, “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.”
As we’ve been studying through Hebrews, the message has been clear: Don’t drift away from Jesus!
Here’s a great lesson from the Superbowl Halftime Show:
Katy Perry was born Katy Hudson. Before she became a famous pop star, she was a rising Christian singer. With both parents being committed Christians and her father a pastor, she grew up in a Christian home. (If you want to sample her Christian music beginnings, look up ‘Katy Hudson’ on youtube). So, how does this young woman who sings for Jesus walk away from it to sing about how great the pleasures of the world are? What leads someone away from Jesus when their faith seems so strong? Maybe this week, you can have an honest discussion with your kids, that it is important not just to believe in God, and follow Him now, but to be very careful to stay the course, and not drift away!
Sometimes, the Superbowl can give us an opportunity for ‘Sunday school’ time with our family!
ASK: What things pull your attention away from following Jesus? How can we keep our eyes set on what He wants for us?
