One Faith. One Cause

This Sunday we are embarking on a new series in the book of Philippians. This is Paul’s happiest letter. And the happiness is infectious. Before we’ve read a dozen lines, we begin to feel the joy ourselves.

As is often the case with his letters, Paul introduces the major theme in the introduction, namely, partnership in the gospel. It’s the same theme he emphasizes in the conclusion (4:10ff), and everywhere in between.

This series will explore questions about why we need Christ, what it means to live for Christ, and how God calls us to steadfast, joyful, and unified partnership in the gospel.

The ____________________ of Gospel Partnership

“One Faith, One Cause” – Philippians 1:1-8

Main Idea: The church is one family, united by the gospel and for the gospel’s advance.

CONNECTING:

When you think of Christian fellowship, what comes to mind? What do you expect?

UNDERSTANDING:

Read Philippians 1:1-2. What do you notice about the way Paul introduces himself in this letter? How is it similar or different from how he introduces himself in other letters? Why do you think he does this?

Read Paul’s prayer for the Philippians in 1:3-11. Next week we’ll look closely at what Paul prays in vv. 9-11. But for now, what do notice about why Paul prays? What about how Paul prays?

Paul uses the word “fellowship” or “partnership” in v. 5 and a related word (“share” or “partake”) in v. 7. How does he describe fellowship here, and how does that compare or contrast with our common definitions or expectations?

Based on all of this, how would you summarize the calling of the Philippian church?

LIVING:

As you consider Paul’s affection for the Philippians, how does your affection for the church or your Life Group compare? Why do you think that is? How can you nurture affection as a group?

What are some practical ways you as a Life Group can partner together for the gospel’s advance?

In our effort to advance the gospel together, how should the promise of v. 6 impact our service?

ASSIGNMENT: With your group, memorize Philippians 1:6, and spend time praying for one another and for the cause of the gospel in eastern Iowa and around the globe.
