Discussion Guide:

MAIN IDEA: God sovereignly uses people and persecution to proclaim the gospel to the end of the earth.

Have you ever experienced rejection from a loved one, employer, or friend? Have you ever suffered, or been persecuted, because of your faith? How did you feel, and what did you learn in the process?

Read Acts 1:8. How would you describe to someone how the events of Acts 7-8 fulfill what Christ said?

Read Acts 7:1-60. What observations can you make about what Stephen said? Did you notice how well he knew the Old Testament? What observations can you make about the response of the Sanhedrin?

Read Acts 8:4-8. What is the significance of Philip going to Samaria to proclaim Christ? What was the attitude of Jews toward the Samaritans? What lesson can we learn from his example?

Read Acts 8:9-24. How does the story of Simon, the magician, help you understand what it means to surrender your life to Christ? What is it about Simon that seems to show he never committed his life to Christ? In what ways does his reaction to Peter’s request to repent (8:21-24) show his misunderstanding about the gospel?

Read Acts 8:26-40. Why would an angel ask Philip to leave a successful ministry in Samaria to go to an isolated place in the desert? Do you think this request could have been difficult for Philip to obey? What principles of personal evangelism can be learned from Philip’s encounter with the Ethiopian?

What happens in your heart when an opportunity to share your faith presents itself? What holds you back from sharing your faith? Fear of rejection, lack of knowledge, feeling unprepared? How can being able to share your faith story help you identify with Christ and share the difference He’s made in your life?

How does seeing God use persecution and suffering in Acts 7 and 8 help you to trust Him in the midst of your suffering?

When the eunuch saw the water he asked Philip, “what prevents me from being baptized?” Spend some time talking about the importance of baptism. Is there anyone in your group who has not been baptized since becoming a follower of Christ?
