When the Spirit Comes in Power

August 26, 2018

Christ PREPARES us for his mission (Acts 1:1-26)

  • You are a witness! (Acts 1:1-11)
  • The key to preparation is PRAYER (Acts 1:12-26)

Christ’s Spirit EMPOWERS us to be his WITNESSES (Acts 2:1-47)

  • The Spirit is POURED OUT at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13)
  • Good news is proclaimed with power (Acts 2:14-37)

How was the gospel proclaimed in the early church and how does it help us?

  • A new community is marked by grace (Acts 2:38-47)

Four marks of the early church are (Acts 2:42-47)

  1. TEACHING (2:42)
  2. FELLOWSHIP (2:42)
  3. WORSHIP (2:42)
  4. EVANGELISM (2:47)

What is your next step with the 404 vision in light of Acts 1-2?

Discussion Guide:

Main Idea: Christ’s Spirit calls, equips and empowers us to be his community of witnesses.

What do you hear from co-workers and fellow students about Christianity? What do you hear in media about Christians and church? Why is some news negative and even hostile to faith?

Early Christians faced opposition too. The book of Acts tells of the resurrected Jesus commissioning his friends for ministry and empowering them through his Spirit. Read Acts 1:1-11 with your group. What title would you give it? What did Jesus do with his friends after his resurrection? What did he promise them?

When disciples asked about his kingdom (1:6-8), what did Jesus emphasize and why? When you read Acts 1:8, what is Jesus saying? Does verse 1:8 apply to you? If not, why not? If so, what are some attitudes, priorities and specific actions we need to make for our lives?

After Jesus ascended into heaven, did his followers do what he told them to do (Acts 1:12-26)? What role did prayer have among Jesus’ family and friends between the Ascension and Pentecost (Acts 1:14, 24-25)? What can we learn from this example for our own ministry and 404 vision?

Read Acts 2:1-13 out loud with your group. Why is this event called Pentecost? What were the sounds and effects of the outpouring of the Spirit? How does it relate to Acts 1:5?

In Peter’s sermon (Acts 2:14-37), Randy pointed to four things that show up in the sermons of Acts. What are they and how do you see them in this passage? How do these four things help us to be more confident in our own witness?

After Peter’s sermon, how did people respond (2:37-41)? What will God do for a person who repents (turns from sin) and believes in Christ (2:38)? In what ways have you experienced the Spirit’s presence in your life?

Read Acts 2:42-47 aloud with your group. Identify the four marks of a Spirit-filled community in these verses. Where do you see these things in the life of ministry of Stonebridge Church? As we approach our 404 vision, how can we grow stronger in these areas as we yield to the power and authority of the Spirit of Christ?
