As we conclude our “Sacred Selfies” series, we are given a wonderful glimpse of Paul the edifier, or builder, of believers. We are presented with a compelling model for us today. Even though Paul is defending himself from criticisms that had arisen after he had left Thessalonica, we are given a picture of how a good shepherd works.
What makes a church _______________ (1 Thessalonians 2:1-6)?
What is the focus of an _____________ church (1 Thessalonians 2:7-12)?
Main Idea: An effective church is inspired by Biblical values which build growing disciples.
What was one of your most embarrassing failures in middle school or high school? What did you learn from this experience?
Read 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10. Why was the Apostle Paul so thankful for the church in Thessalonica?
Read 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12. Reading between the lines, what rumors seem to have been spread about Paul by his enemies (2:1-6)? How does Paul defend himself in these verses?
What is the cost of an effective church ministry (2:1-2)? What Biblical value is highlighted in 1 Thessalonians 2:3-4? What is the value described in 2:5-6? Why are these values important?
Read 1 Thessalonians 2:7-12. What do the images of mother (2:7), father (2:11) and children (2:7,11) add to a picture of Biblical ministry? How would Paul’s example of perseverance encourage them? How does his purpose for them challenge you personally (2:10-12)?
Paul lists the characteristics of the unethical ministry of false teachers in this passage. Where do you see similar traits in false teachers and teaching today? Why is this dangerous for believers?
What are the characteristics and values of a Biblical and effective church ministry? Review the four values described in this message. Which do you possess? Which do you want to develop?
How do you see these Bible values lived out at Stonebridge? Who has been a positive influence on you to live a lifestyle which reflects Jesus? How can you grow in your walk with Jesus so you can become a “self-feeding” Christian, empowered by the Spirit and ready to serve others?
ASSIGNMENT: With your group, review the “Sacred Selfies” series. Evaluate your involvement in the Discipleship Pathway (Worship, Life Group, Service Teams). What are your thoughts on personal next steps? With your LIFE Group Leader, review the survey you took this weekend. What are your next steps in regard to the 404 initiative? Close in prayer, giving thanks for God’s faithfulness to Stonebridge through 60 years of ministry.
At Stonebridge, we believe disciples should always be growing in faith. Growing means changing, learning, sharing, giving. And step by step blessing others along the way. There are many options for your next step…TAKE YOUR NEXT STEP
