His name is wonderful. Christians celebrate with great joy. Yet we may miss the fullness of a relationship with our reigning King. The prophet Isaiah prepares us for the significance of the Name that is above all Names, the name of Jesus! This weekend we will focus on God as our Everlasting Father
How do we cope with a world of change?
Isaiah 9:6; John 3:17; 6:38; Philippians 2:6
Psalm 90:1-2; Ecclesiastes 3:9-11
Psalm 31:14-15; 1 John 1:1-2; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
We are invited into his eternity (John 10:10!
Isaiah 7:14; Hebrews 13:5; John 10:27-30; 1 John 3:2
Main Idea: Christ, our Everlasting Father, will care for us now and forever
What are some changes that have occurred in your lifetime? List them with your group (technology, cultural issues, ect.). What changes have you observed just in the last five years? How do these changes impact you? How is our society handling these rapid changes?
Read Isaiah 9:1-7. Review the names in 9:6-7 and praise Christ together as you begin the study:
If you lived in Isaiah’s time and heard these things, what expectations might be stirred in you.
Why does Isaiah call Jesus “Eternal Father”? If God is One in three Persons-the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Spirit is God, how is Jesus both Son and Father? How do NT writers interpret what this prophecy means (Matthew 4:12-17; Luke 1:32; John 8:12)?
What do we mean when we say Jesus is eternal? How do you respond to those who say Jesus was created? What Bible evidence was given to suggest he existed before his birth in Bethlehem? Since Jesus is eternal Father and Creator, how do we as humans sense eternity within us (Psalm 90:1-2; Ecclesiastes 3:11)?
How does Jesus invite us into His eternity (John 10:10)? Review the four elements described: The Problem, the Plan, the Switch and the Response (Romans 6:23). Have you entered into the eternity of Jesus Christ? Why or why not?
How is Jesus the Lord of time (Psalm 31:15; John 2:4; 7:6; Psalm 90:9,10; John 11:25)? How does the name “Immanuel” bring assurance for a variety of life’s circumstances (Psalm 31:14-15; 1 John 1:1-2; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
How is the eternal perspective of Jesus Christ revealed in the way he felt about people (read Matthew 9:36-38)? How has the eternity of Christ influenced Steve Duffy’s story?
Assignment: Discuss with your group: How will you live in light this teaching on our eternal Father? How will this change the way you relate to children, your church and your community in 2019?
