Finding the Treasure

by Melissa Majorins

“The B.I.B.L.E. Yes that’s the book for me.  I stand alone on the word of God, the B.I.B.L.E.  BIBLE!”

You may remember this song from your time as a young child in Sunday school or you may even have taught this song to your children.  This song reminds us that God’s Word, the Bible, is important in our lives as a believer.  But how much do you know how to get around the Bible yourself?  How much do you teach your children about the Bible?

God’s Word, the Bible, is important to our daily lives.

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

Psalm 19 shows how precious God’s Word is in verse 10:  “More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.”

So how do we engage with our children in the Bible?  Here are a few tips:

1.       Gather a hard copy of the Bible (although an electronic copy of the Bible is good, nothing replaces touching the pages and discovering the Bible through paper pages).

2.       Go on a Treasure Hunt and discover with your children the following questions:

     a.       How many books are in the Bible? (count them up using the table of contents or thumbing through each book of the Bible)

     b.      How many books are in the Old Testament?

     c.       How many books are in the New Testament?

     d.      How do you find the address of a Bible Verse? (What do the big numbers and little numbers in the bible mean?)

3.       Take turns saying a Bible Verse reference out loud and have each family member find the Bible Verse (here are some verses to start with:  John 3:16, Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Psalm 19:10, Hebrews 4:12)

4.       Practice all 66 books of the Bible.  Take 5 at a time to memorize and keep adding until you have memorized all the books of the Bible.  Memorizing the books of the Bible will help you know where in the Bible to look up scriptures so you don’t have to always use the Table of Contents.  Learn a song that goes along with the books of the Bible or make up your own song.

Start today with digging into God’s Word and discovering what God has for us through the Bible!  You will not regret it!
